 When respondents become Experts
I'm always amazed at how quickly respondents become interested and involved in a subject - even something relatively dull.   I'm always having to remind myself that while they are genuinely trying to help and to express honest opinions, there is an ever present danger of their trying too hard and becoming "experts," leaving the world of real-life responses and enter the realms of "over-educated respondent".

I'm here - what more do you want?

Sometimes I think that the hardest part of our job is simply getting to meetings or focus group venues!  Stuck on a train for 5 hours going to Newcastle and only just got to the group on time.  Thank God I'm one of those ridiculously neurotic people who allows twice as much time as is really necessary for a journey.   I may spend an amount of time drinking coffee and kicking my heels, but at least I'm there when I'm wanted!

A great name for a pub

The snow has been a foot deep outside the office door for a week. Yesterday, Tammy  the office cat dragged me away from a complicated set of tables with urgent cries and a panic stricken look.  Assuming she wanted a "nature break", I opened the front door and stood in a freeezing gale while she stared at me with disdain and then stalked off down the corridor to her sleeping quarters.  Assuming she wanted food, I checked her bowls.  They were full.  It was then that I noticed she'd got her nose pressed against the radiator, miaowing pitifully and looking at me with big saucer eyes.  Yup, she wanted the radiators switched on.  The Cat & Radiator - good name for a pub....

It's just the same people, but somewhere else!

I was observing some groups of 18-24 year olds in Sao Paulo recently and was struck by that old cliche of the global village.  Despite the cultural differences, we really are more alike than unalike.  As a simple human being, I find that a comforting thought.

Added Value hotel rooms

Stayed in a hotel in Bogota costing £350 a night, which had been booked for me by a client.  Although comfortable enough, I thought the price a bit steep for an unexceptional hotel.  However, whilst browsing through the hotel guide in an attempt to get to sleep, I found that the real added value of the hotel was invested in a list of security measures which would probably be considered as overkill by the Queen's own Protection Unit. The added-value I was being treated to included armed guards at all hotel entrances and on every floor, horizontal and vertical CCTV cameras throughout, bullet-proof glass in my room windows and anti-climb paint on all exposed pipework.  Needless to say, I slept with one eye open for the rest of the night!

Hands Up all those who hate PowerPoint!

Well alright, hate is probably a bit strong but I find it such a soul-less piece of software.  You only have to look at a presentation to know it's in PowerPoint - it's predictable in its look and dull in styling.  Surely Microsoft could employ a few people who do creative charting and use their flair and imagination to offer more flexible and attractive styles and options for those of us who work with it every day and who hate dull charts!
